In The Spotlight: Lodging

No Hilton's, Hyatts, or Marriotts to be found on Virginia's Northern Neck.  No, Sir!  We have better accomodations to offer for a fraction of the price associated with these glitzy places.  Nothing compares in price or personality with a Grand View Bed and Breakfast, a Hope and Glory Inn, or a Whispering Pines Motel room.  Our lodgings tend to be more toward the friendly and informal - reflecting the confidence and culture of our Neck.  Life's pace is a step slower than the major metropolitan areas of Richmond to the south and Washington, D.C. to the north.  There are probably more stop lights on one City of Richmond block than there are in all four counties of the Northern Neck.  But you had better bring a car, bike, walk or boat in order to get around.  There are no trains, planes, buses, taxi cabs scurring people about.  The Northern Neck is a place to come for relaxation, exploring, dining and shopping.   So, let's take a look at some of these relaxing lodging opportunities ...

We are blessed in the Northern Neck with many fine accomodations

Inns, Bed & Breakfasts, and Houses

INN: Establishments where travelers can procure food, drink, and lodging.  They first sprang up when the Romans built their system of highways two milennia ago.  In addition to providing for the needs of travelers, inns traditionally acted as community gathering places.

B&B: A bed and breakfast, often referred to as a B&B, is a lodging typically operated out of a large single family residence where guests can be accommodated at night in private bedrooms (which may or may not be equipped with private baths) and where breakfast, sometimes Continental and sometimes the full English variety, is served in the morning.

HOUSE: "House or Home" are places that typically function as an Inn or B&B.  For example, see "The Bell House."

Cabins & Cottages

CABIN: A small, roughly built house, usually constructed of wood; the term is typically used by people to describe a house in the country that they travel to on summer weekends

COTTAGE:  a small house of any period, always 1 story with attic space above the 1st floor. Typically used as a seasonal home or a second dwelling on a property. Cottages generally have a minimal or no foundation, instead resting on posts at the corners of the home.

Motel & Hotels

MOTEL: A type of hotel in which parking is provided at or near the room and the room door gives out onto the parking lot.

HOTEL: an establishment that provides lodging, usually on a short-term basis where travelers can pay for lodging and meals and other services; usually distinguished by a front desk, dining and other common facilities; (Fortunately, we don’t have to discern between a Hotel and other types of lodging in the Northern Neck – we don’t have establishments claiming to be or fitting the description of “Hotel”.  If you want to stay at a Hotel, you will have to go elsewhere.)
